WHAT IS THE ASBU CORPORATE OPEN ACCESS ARCHIVE?

It is an archive that stores academic works produced within the Social Sciences University of Ankara in an international standard digital environment, ensures their long-term preservation and aims to make them accessible to the widest possible audience. Operations are carried out through the DSpace open source enterprise archive system. 

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE ASBU CORPORATE OPEN ACCESS ARCHIVE?

  • To ensure that the academic works produced in our university are compiled in accordance with open access standards and preserved in the Institutional Academic Archive, 
  • To ensure that the scientific works taken into account in appointments and upgrades and other in-board evaluations are opened to open access in the Institutional Academic Archives, 
  • To provide easy and fast access to scientific studies at our university for a wider audience, 
  • To ensure that the scientific works of the researchers of our university in the open archive receive more citations, 
  • To contribute to national and international open archive studies, 
  • To increase the recognition and reputation of our university at the national and international level, 
  • To increase the impact factors of publications belonging to our university, 
  • To facilitate the welding of research results to other studies, to prevent the repetition of the same or similar studies, 
  • To contribute to the national economy by providing free access to scientific studies. 

THE BENEFITS OF THE ASBU CORPORATE OPEN ACCESS ARCHIVE

a) Benefits to the Institution:

  1. It increases the visibility, recognition and reputation of the university.
  2. It eliminates the access limitation to research results supported by the university,
  3. prevents the university from buying the research it supports from commercial sources by paying a fee again.
  4. It collects, manages the digital academic work of the university and provides long-term protection.
  5. Introduces the university to potential stakeholders.
  6. It increases academic cooperation and provides a working environment in interdisciplinary fields.
  7. It facilitates the development and sharing of Digital Course Materials.
  8. It provides students with a content platform that supports their scientific development.

b) Individual Benefits: 

Recent studies show that research results made available to open access in all branches of science receive 2-3 times more citations compared to the number of citations to be provided through traditional publishing.

  • It provides free and fast access to research results thanks to the Internet.

 

IS IT MANDATORY TO REGISTER PUBLICATIONS IN THE ASBU CORPORATE OPEN ACCESS ARCHIVE? 

Compiling and archiving institution-addressed publications at universities and the Council of Higher Education is a duty given to universities by the Higher Education Law No. 2547. Therefore, the registration of publications in the Corporate Academic Archive is mandatory.

Law no. 2547;

  • article 42/c requires the compilation of publications,
  • and articles 4/c and 12/c require the dissemination of scientific data by word, writing and other means.

USE OF THE ASBU CORPORATE OPEN ACCESS ARCHIVE

Uploading a Publication to the Archive: Only Academic outputs addressed to Social Sciences University of Ankara can be uploaded to the Academic Institutional Open Access Archive System.

The publications published within ASBU in the Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed indexes are added to the archive system by the ASBU Library and Documentation Department. For academic materials that are not included in these indexes, a publication information form should be filled and submitted to our Department. Click for Publication Information Form.

Theses and dissertations: after the theses of master's and doctoral students are accepted, the Institute to which it is affiliated is obliged to submit the electronic formats of the theses to our Department for registration in the Open Access System within a month.

Use for research purposes: Social Sciences University of Ankara Institutional Open Archive provides its users with the opportunity to search by access areas such as chapters & collections, date, author, title, subject, and full texts of publications. 

WHAT ARE THE CHECKPOINTS WHEN REGISTERING A PUBLICATION IN THE ASBU UNIVERSITY CORPORATE OPEN ACCESS ARCHIVE?

  • Control of the metadata of the source
  • Control of metadata additional entries (topic, etc.)
  • Control of the file validity and content information for completeness and accuracy
  • Access restrictions (For reasons such as the publication to be patented, access restrictions may be made by not allowing full-text access.)

COPYRIGHT 

All publications within ASBU must be archived in the Institutional Open Access Archive in accordance with the provisions of the"ACADEMIC OPEN ACCESS AND CORPORATE ARCHIVE DIRECTIVE". In order for archived publications to be made available to the public, the author or the Social Sciences University of Ankara must have the copyright of the publication. The full texts of the publications whose copyright is held by third parties or institutions are kept closed to open access, although they are archived in the ASBU Institutional Open Access Archive. However, researchers are allowed to send a request to the author of the publication via the system.

Since the preprints of the authors' publications will be a different version from the original copy (publisher edition), publishing them in the Corporate Open Access Archive does not pose any copyright problems. In this case, there is no need to ask permission from any person or organization. Because the copyright owner is himself/herself.

If the authors want to store the original copy of their publication (publisher edition) in the Corporate Open Access Archive of the Social Sciences University of Ankara, if they have signed a copyright agreement in the past and there is a full copyright transfer, he will need to obtain the permission of the copyright owner. Currently, 70% of publishers allow personal archiving.

WHAT IS AN EMBARGO? WHY IS IT NECESSARY? 

It means keeping the research results closed to access for a certain period of time. If authors wish to store the original copy (publisher's edition) of their publications in the Fırat University Institutional Open Archive, they will need to obtain the permission of the copyright holder if they have signed a copyright agreement in the past and there is a full copyright transfer. In case the copyright owner does not allow the publication to be published in the open archive, the embargo date must be entered during the registration of the publication to the Institutional Archive and the publication must be kept inaccessible. At the end of the set embargo date, the publication is automatically made available to open access. In cases where the publication will be patented, the author may set an embargo date by not allowing full-text access to the publication.

CORPORATE ARCHIVE TERMINOLOGY

  • Pre-print (preprint): The first version of the article sent to the journal for publication before the referee/editor evaluation.
  • Post-print (postprint): The final version of the article has been reviewed by the referee/editor and is ready for publication.
  • Publisher edition: The format of the article published in the journal.
  • Immediate storage: Immediate placing of the post print in the institutional open archive after publication acceptance.
  • The duration of the embargo: The period during which the publication should be closed to open access, determined by the funder or publisher.
  • Request button (request buaon): Request button for publications whose full text cannot be opened.
  • DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals): It is a multidisciplinary index that provides a collective search facility in the metadata of open access journals and a link to access the full text.
  • OpenDOAR (Directory of Open Access Repositories): It is a directory that lists institutional digital archives and mediates collective searches on their contents.
  • ROAR (Registry of Open Access Repositories)It is an index that gives a list of corporate digital archives.
  • Metadata (Metadata): It is a set of data that defines a source of information. In other words, it is structured information related to the discovery, identification, use and management of digital information and information resources.
